Emergency Information
Orthodontic emergencies are rare, but small issues can occasionally happen while you’re wearing braces or other orthodontic appliances. The good news is that most situations are not true emergencies and can often be managed at home until you’re able to visit our office. Knowing what to do if something breaks, feels uncomfortable, or causes irritation will help keep your treatment on track and give you peace of mind.
Loose Bracket
If a bracket becomes loose but is still attached to the wire, gently slide it back into place and cover it with orthodontic wax to prevent irritation. Call our office so we can schedule a repair appointment.
Poking Wire
If a wire is sticking out and irritating your cheek, try using a clean cotton swab or eraser end of a pencil to gently push it back into place. If that doesn’t work, place a small piece of orthodontic wax over the end of the wire. Call us if the discomfort continues.
General Soreness
Mild soreness or pressure is normal after getting braces adjusted. Stick to soft foods for a few days and use over-the-counter pain relief if needed. A warm salt water rinse can also help ease irritation.
Broken or Lost Retainer
If your retainer breaks or goes missing, call our office right away. Retainers are important for maintaining your results, and we’ll help replace or repair it quickly.
Mouth Soreness or Irritation
Braces can sometimes cause small sores inside the mouth. Use orthodontic wax to cover any rough spots, and rinse with warm salt water to promote healing.
